The oldest building on Hilton Head Island has a brand-new addition, thanks to an Eagle Scout project. And the beneficiaries are anyone interested in the island’s history. Scout Jacob Palchak and his Troop 245 built and installed eight benches and a lectern next to the Baynard Mausoleum, off the William Hilton Parkway at Mathews Drive. This addition allows the Heritage Library, which owns the site, to offer comfortable presentations about the island’s historic patriots, planters and other pioneers. The benches, built at Jacob Palchak’s house, are set into concrete foundations. The lectern is portable. The materials were donated or offered at a reduced rate by Espy Lumber on Hilton Head Island. The Bargain Box of Hilton Head Island donated the funding for the construction of the speaker’s platform, constructed by local contractor Kyle Mulligan. In addition, the Van Landingham Rotary donated the funds needed to add electricity to the site for a speaker system and lighting for programs. The Baynard Mausoleum was built in 1846 (more than 60 years before the Boy Scouts came into existence) as part of the Zion Chapel of Ease Cemetery. The chapel is gone but historic graves remain. The Heritage Library presents tours of the site every Friday at 10 a.m. To sign up, go to HeritageLib.org or call 843-686-6560. You can use these same contact points to contribute to the non-profit library’s campaign to restore and maintain the mausoleum and cemetery. Jacob, 16, has been accepted to the Governor’s School for Math and Science in Hartsville, South Carolina where he will complete his last two years of high school. He lives in Hilton Head Plantation with his parents, Dori and Alan Palchak. #hiltonhead #historicpreservation #baynardmausoleum FriendsOfBaynard.org

Here's a cool photo of the local wild marsh ponies found on Beaufort's Sea Islands. Marsh Tacky horses were brought to the coast as early as the 1500s by the Spanish. They were used by the colonists during the American Revolution, and by South Carolinians for farm work, herding and hunting. They are rare, with very few in existence today. (and, always best viewed from a safe distance) Photo by Jackie Brothers

Murray Christopher and Arthur Champion, both of Hilton Head Island, reading the depositions of their ancestors at the National Underground Railroad Conference at the Westin. This program was originally put together by The Heritage Library in Fall of 2014 when the organization rolled out "The People on Hilton Head Island During The Civil War" which was a heavily researched and complied list of names of people, and in some cases occupations, of those here during that time period. #History #LivingHistory #Gullah Gullah/Geechee Nation National Underground Railroad Conference
